Maybe Brett Favre really is retired.
The former Green Bay Packers’ quarterback never played in the American Century Championship while he was quarterbacking in the National Football League. But only two months into retirement, Favre has agreed to play in the 19th edition of the ACC on July 8-13 at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.
Favre's confirmed acceptance to play at the 19th American Century Championship golf tournament was announced at the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (LTVA) Marketing Advisory Committee meeting on Friday.
"He's a tremendous addition to the line up," said Sue Barton, LTVA director of visitor information.
Bryan Davis, marketing manager for Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, said Favre is a huge name and provides excitement for those watching the tournament.
Overall, it will help with viewership and is great for the event.
"And it makes the Packer fans happy," Davis said.
During his 16-year NFL career, Favre won three Associated Press Most Valuable Player awards and led the Packers to two Super Bowl appearances. In his first Super Bowl in 1997, Favre and the Packers beat the New England Patriots 35-21.
Favre totes a number of NFL records into retirement — including most career touchdown passes (442), most career passing yards (61,655), most career pass completions (5,377), most career pass attempts (8,758), most consecutive starts among quarterbacks (275) and most career victories as a starting QB (160).
Weeks after announcing his retirement, there was speculation that Favre was already considering a comeback. But now that he’s playing golf, perhaps he really is done with football.
More than 80 sport stars and celebrity actors have pledged to play in the American Century Championship golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, tournament organizers have announced.
Besides Favre, new to the tournament are NASCAR driver Dale Jarrett, actor Aidan Quinn, sports announcer Joe Buck, baseball Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith, former All-Star outfielder Darryl Strawberry and 11-time national sportswriter-of-the-year Rick Reilly.
Returning celebrities include Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Tony Romo, Dennis Miller, Ray Romano, Mario Lemieux, Dan Marino, LaDainian Tomlinson, John Elway and Jerry Rice.
The 54-hole tournament has been played at Edgewood Tahoe's 6,707-yard lakeside course since 1990. Chris Chandler won the tournament last year. His stiffest competition should be from six-time winner Rick Rhoden, four-time winner Dan Quinn and past champions Jack Wagner, Billy Joe Tolliver, Mario Lemieux, Al Del Greco and Mark Rypien.
Tickets are available daily at the gate. Prices are $15 for July 8-9 and $25 per day July 10-13. A weeklong pass costs $60 for all six days of the event. Advance ticket purchases prior to June 15 receive a $5 discount. Kids 10 and younger are free with a paid adult.
