Tahoe Youth and Family Services, which maintains a Drop In/Resource Center for youths at 1021 Fremont Ave. in South Lake Tahoe, recently opened a second center in the Ranchos area of the Carson Valley to implement the alcohol and drug prevention curriculum. "Project Alert" is made possible through a grant from the Partnership of Community Resources.
The Drop In/Resource Center is a safe place teens can access for resources, to rest for a while, complete homework, use the computer, eat, get hygiene products and talk to someone about their circumstances.
"In the South Lake Tahoe Drop In/Resource Center, we help youth retain identification and birth certificates that their parents neglected to keep for them and are essential to obtaining employment and housing," said Alissa Nourse, executive director. "We give away a lot of socks to kids who are traveling by foot and provide a lot of food to hungry teens."
The items listed here will enable TYFS staff to create a warm and inviting place for youths with easy, free access to a washer and dryer, and brochures on available community resources. The desks and chairs will allow the staff to work more efficiently to provide these valuable services for the youths of the community.
Items needed include bags of socks, shoes, basic office supplies, cleaning supplies, a folding table, stuffed and office chairs, office desks, wall-mounted business card holder, wall brochure rack, 650 square feet of carpet with installation, and a stackable washer and dryer. Also needed are bags of men's boxer underwear, board games, movies and DVDs appropriate for teens, puzzles, plastic utensils and paper plates, and feminine hygiene products.
Cash donations also are being accepted to put toward these items and direct services. To make a donation and for more information, call (530) 541-2445 or (775) 782-4202. All donations are tax-deductible.
