LAS VEGAS — The 28-year-old daughter of slain state Controller Kathy Augustine is running for the state Assembly seat her mother once held.
Dallas Augustine, a Republican, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal she thought her mother would be proud if she wins the same seat her mother won in 1992.
Democrats have a better than 2-to-1 registration advantage in Assembly District 12, which is represented by Democratic incumbent James Ohrenschall.
Ohrenschall, who said he intends to seek re-election, replaced his mother, Genie Ohrenschall, as the Assembly district representative in 2007.
Kathy Augustine served one Assembly term, two state Senate terms and two terms as state controller before she was slain in July 2006 by her husband, former emergency room nurse Chaz Higgs.
Higgs was convicted last June of killing Augustine by injecting her with a paralytic drug. He is serving a 20 years to life sentence in state prison.
